I was trying to show some visitors a good time at the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds Tuesday and succeeded.
Thankfully my guests didn’t notice the smell.
I assumed it was the Schumer plume from the wastewater discharge just north of the Rainbow Bridge.
Then I opened social media today and saw numerous posts from across the city complaining about the smell. The cause is hard to pinpoint.
I did not smell it at our house in DeVeaux.
Speculation about possible sources:
- Wastewater treatment plant having another incident with its sewage lagoon/treatment process. The Schumer plume below the Maid of the Mist Observation deck looked normal.
- Cascades Paper Mill: Problems with odors from there have been better in the last year or so but it is never worth ruling out.
- Something related to Mount Trashmore, the big dump at the base of the North Grand Island Bridges which accepts 2,000 tons of construction debris and “nonhazardous” industrial waste daily. You can read more about the landfill here. https://niagarafallslandfill.com/

The Town of Niag Supervisor commented on my post. It was not the dump of Cascades. It was the wastewater facility. I don’t think she’d say it if not true..
I would think that it can from our waste treatment plant. But why can't the city use some of the American rescue act to help build a new treatment plant? It would benefit all the people with lower water bills.
Although I cannot claim knowledge yet, I would imagine that with our water board being a privately run operation they would not be eligible for those funds. Buffalo just announced a 250 million dollar upgrade to their plant as a part of a 1 billion dollar, 15 year plan that involves many different funding sources. Solutions are available....
