With the school year just a week away, local educators and parents gathered at Niagara Falls High School with Governor Kathy Hochul for a round table discussion regarding the new state-mandated cell phone ban. Hochul said though the ban will help with student’s mental health, its main focus is on eliminating classroom distractions.
"The students have to look at either a math teacher or a TikTok dance video, and sorry teachers, we know what's winning out there," said Hochul.
Superintendent of Niagara Falls City School District Mark Laurie and Lackawanna Superintendent Nadia Nashir led the round table discussion that included students, parents and Hochul.
Among those students was Harjyot Kaur a senior at Niagara Falls High School as well as a student board member. She said the bell-to-bell ban will be a change, and will take some getting used to.
"It's definitely a change, for sure. Change takes time," said Kaur. "As we go deeper into the school year I think people will get used to the fact that your phone won't be available to pull out."
Niagara Falls High School has acquired phone pouches that can only be unlocked by a specialized magnetic base, similar to a retail security tag. Individual districts will have the final say on how phones will be stored throughout the day and protocols for students who break the rules.
I think it is a wonderful idea as long as the maintain it. Some of the beautiful murals downtown need to be touch up.

Try and share at least two more pages of your notes. There was a lot that was shared. I am looking forward to more people coming out to vote. A portion of the candidates have already been out door knocking and engaging in multiple non political events. This is shaping up to be a tight race.
I hope you are right. I am skeptical about how tight the race is because of how few people vote. In spite of all the time I have spent thinking, and writing, I still can't tell you for whom I might vote. Our choices are not clearly defined. I am grateful for the people workiing for the betterment of our community.
I'm so happy that one of my favorite derelict houses may get new life! It's such a great location. "A genius child is never loved."
