Read to succeed seeks volunteers
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Read to Succeed is hosting four information sessions for prospective volunteers to serve as tutor/mentors in its High Impact Tutoring program known as Experience Corps, in Buffalo and Niagara Falls City Schools.
Experience Corps Buffalo, a partnership between Read to Succeed and the National AARP Foundation, recruits, trains, and supports mature older adult volunteers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring for children who are not reading at grade-level in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Currently Read to Succeed is supporting 137 older adult tutor/mentors working with 400 young struggling readers across 13 elementary schools.
The information sessions will be offered on the following dates:
- Tuesday, April 28th at 1 PM, at the Frank E Merriweather Jr Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave, Buffalo, NY 14208
- Wednesday, May 13th at 1 PM, at the Frank E Merriweather Jr Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave, Buffalo, NY 14208
- Thursday, May 14th at 10 AM, at the Roswell Park Community Outreach and Engagement Center, 907 Michigan Ave, Buffalo, NY 14204
- Tuesday, May 19th at 1 PM, at the Earl W. Brydges Main Library, 1317 Portage Rd, Niagara Falls, NY 14302
Experience Corps volunteer tutor/mentors meet individually with a student two-three times per week for 30 minutes per session. Sessions are very structured and focus on building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through repeated reading practice and models of fluent reading. Experience Corps volunteer tutor/mentors receive significant training and on-site support from a Read to Succeed literacy coach.
