Annual coat distribution Saturday

While many hope this is a temporary absence of Rashawn Salmon, who is the founder of one of the city’s annual winter coats give-away events, warm-hearted Niagara Falls community members have banded together to ensure the continuance of the 5th Annual Coats of Hope event.

Organizers insist it will bring warm smiles and warmer bodies to young school students as they wade their way through yet another one of Niagara Falls’ cold and snowy winters. As a result of Salmon’s absence, community activist Jill Shaw, along with John and Veronica Campbell, the founders of the charitable A Free Helping Hand, pitched in to carry on the event.

Campbell said, “We’re helping these kids stay warm and safe while keeping them focused on school and other positive pursuits.”

The free coat event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 742 19th St. Parental presence is required. Coats are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Children can receive free winter coats in sizes 5T to XL.

While children will be glad to get the warm coats, community members’ hearts will also be warmed because of their gallant efforts. Shaw said that the importance of this year’s event is a poignant reminder of the importance of community involvement and compassion in addressing the critical needs of others.

Shaw stated, “Salmon’s story can underscore the challenges faced when basic needs go unmet, but also the transformational potential of what could happen when we come together to support one another.”

Shaw praises Salmon’s vision and the dedication of local leaders and sponsors to ensure that no child in Niagara Falls faces either cold or difficult choices alone. Responding to the group’s request for leadership, Co-Founder of Niagara Falls Peacemakers and former Niagara Falls City Councilman Ezra P. Scott Jr. graciously coordinated efforts where the community needed them.

Sponsors of the event include Angie’s Soul Kitchen, the Dream Juice Bar, Lee’s Restaurant and Juice Bar, Geno’s Good Eats, and the many donations of untold citizens. Organizational supporters include NF Peacemakers, S.N.U.G., WNY Fam Inc., and Visionary Property Management. DJ One Way will add to the atmospheric environment by providing music.
