I stopped at the former City DPW Residency on Seneca Avenue on Thursday to see how Demetreus Nix was doing in his build-out of space there for his Friday night event featuring Diamond the Body.
He had run for supplies but Donta Myles was there helping with the lighting. Myles remains a passionate advocate for our city and a father and husband who leads his community by example and from the front.
We chatted a bit about the dysfunctional city council and the kind of action and dedication Niagara Falls requires in order for real change to happen.
I pondered that a bit when I stumbled on this he posted to Facebook regarding the city’s impending foreclosure proceeding. It is worth reading:
“Out of the 24 residents who reached out to me after receiving these foreclosure notices, two have made the courageous decision to share their stories with the news media.
“I want to sincerely thank them. It isn't easy to put yourself and your personal situation in the public eye, but they understand that if no one speaks up, nothing changes.
“Sometimes protecting your home and bringing attention to an issue bigger than yourself means finding the courage to tell your story.
“To everyone else who has reached out, thank you for trusting me. If anyone else is willing to speak publicly, please let me know. Your voice could make a difference, not only for your family, but for others facing the same situation.
“One final thought:
"Before rushing to say, ‘People should just pay their taxes,’ remember that you don't know what someone has been through. Job loss, medical emergencies, the loss of a spouse, disability, or other unexpected hardships can change a family's financial situation overnight.
“If you're not willing to approach this conversation with compassion and understanding, it's okay to keep scrolling. This post is about listening to our neighbors, not judging them.
“THAT IS ALL!
“Be Blessed.”
(And be thankful because there but for the grace of god go you or me. Happy Father's Day, Donta.)
