Great Gorge Railway

I’ve been having a good time taking Buffalo Bike Tours guests to the Great Gorge Railway Trail at the start of the Whirlpool Rapids.

The secret is to find the wastewater treatment access road from the bike trails along the top and cut over.

A slightly challenging thing is that the first few hundred yards are soft/rutted because of one of our downpours this summer

Flower evolution

The tickseed and hibiscus are taking over along the bikepaths as the coneflower fades away.

In the gorge, you can see the start of leaves changing color. It is subtle, but real.

The weather today is a bit chilly as well. We are coming into the shoulder season.

About the deer

I have been noticing more deer around. First, it was a 10-point buck at DeVeaux Woods that posed for photos from 10-feet away. He and Gord paid each other no mind.

Then it was a small doe on the Great Gorge railway who trotted toward me with curiosity, not fear.

The other night at dusk by the Whirlpool Bridge, a pair of young bucks ran in front of me. I circled back and found them under an apple tree near the mound left from the bridge abutment.

They posed for photos. I think the population, safe from hunting, is losing its fear of humans.
