Short Take Politics:

I was both concerned and angry over the freak show that recently took place on the lawn of our White House. The very concept of a steel cage erected on those hallowed grounds, where men would fight for spectacle before a president, should have been met with complete rejection. Yet it went on without pause.

The final blow was not delivered in the cage. It came through a microphone, in the form of a remark dragged up from the gutter: that Michelle Obama is a man.

One would think such a statement would have been met with boos, outrage, disbelief, or at the very least an uncomfortable silence. Instead, there was laughter.

It was then that I felt this country slip another step into hell.

Have we no morals left? No sense of respect? Under Trump, have we become so numb to cruelty and humiliation that we no longer recognize them for what they are?

Do you have no wife, daughter, sister, or friend? If the same degrading remarks were directed at them, would you laugh? Would you remain silent?

If this fails to disturb you, then perhaps you have joined the ranks of those who found it acceptable to excuse boasting about "grabbing women by the pussy," mocking the disabled, ridiculing the grieving, and showing contempt for the sick and vulnerable.

What happened to us?

What happened to the idea that disagreement did not require dehumanization? What happened to common decency, to dignity, to the understanding that public figures should elevate our better angels rather than appeal to our worst instincts?

What happened to America?
