Potpourri for a Sunday

Dry January

“Dry January” is a thing and I am participating. I have not had an alcoholic beverage this year.

Question: Are any of these 20 or 30 somethings who eschew alcohol in favor of marijuana giving it up for the month.

Another question: I know at least 4 50 or 60 something males in my life who are mentally ill. All were long-time pot smokers. Is it a coincidence or is there a correlation.

Socks

I favor Darn Tough wool socks. They are $25 a pair or so, which is expensive, but they come with a lifetime warranty so they aren’t that expensive. I’ve replaced one pair, under warranty, in about 10 years.

Coming up to Christmas, Beth was surprised to find Darn Tough for sale for $13 or so at TJ Maxx.

She also noticed Cabot and Sons socks in the same bin, at a lower price with packaging that looked remarkably like Darn Tough. Indeed, Cabot and Sons socks are produced in the same Vermont Mill. No warranty but just as comfortable.

Soap

For years, I have been purchasing shaving soap from farm makers. First it was Harper Hill Farms goatmilk soap from Charleen Bontrager Satkowski in Bennington Center near Darien Lake.

When we moved to Niagara Falls, I worked through my last few Char bars but then shifted to buying from a woman named Amy Morton who sold goatmilk soap at the Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market. Amy unfortunately died last year.

Senek Farms sold the soap she left behind last year at the market. We loaded up but I started my second last bar this morning.

Shaving soap has to be hard, round, make good suds and smell nice. There are other vendors at the market but they don’t check the boxes. Harper Hill does. Amy did.
