Council to vote on Duke Center air purifier

(Editor’s note: The following press release was issued by E3 Communications on Tuesday regarding a proposed $375,000 expenditure of American Rescue Plan funds for air cleaning equipment to be installed at John Duke Senior Center.

The expenditure is proposed to come from remaining American Rescue Plan funds.

This is the second time in 2 weeks E3 has sent a release that appears to do the political bidding of Mayor Robert Restaino. Last week, it was a release about night gym at the Boys and Girls Club easily confused with previous council resolution funding a night gym program.

After a presentation tonight on the efficacy of the system, the city council will vote. Here is the release from E3.)

Niagara Falls, NY – The Niagara Falls Common Council will consider a proposal from SteriSpace, an air sterilization technology company, to install the sterilization technology at the John A. Duke Senior Citizens Center on Hyde Park Boulevard. The technology already is being utilized at the Schoellkopf Health Center located in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. The technology and related equipment is estimated to be in the range of $375,000.

“We learned many painful lessons from the pandemic and one thing we learned is that our senior citizen population is extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases especially healthcare associated infections at long term/senior care facilities and nursing homes,” said City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino.

According to SteriSpace, the company’s advanced air-sterilization technology eliminates airborne biological agents in a single pass, achieving 99.9999% sterilization effectiveness. Nursing homes and senior-care facilities are among the environments most affected by airborne pathogens.

“This technology will not only strengthen the quality of care provided to our elderly population, but also improve public health preparedness and long-term readiness for future pandemics which we know will happen,” the Mayor continued. “We owe it to our senior population in Niagara Falls to make this investment on their behalf.”

The SteriSpace technology was developed through a collaboration with the State University of New York at Buffalo and has been extensively tested by the United States Department of Defense and other independent testing agencies.
