Potpourri for a Thursday
Saddened by the loss of Owen Steed.
I knew him as kind. He always seemed to be feeding people and spreading words of kindness.
Condolences to his family and those who knew him better. He was a decent man and the rare political person who rose above the fray and loved everyone.
Electronics disposal
Doing some pre-Christmas decluttering, I realized we have too much electronic gear no longer in use, broken laptops, old computer monitors and a spare television or two.
They seem to multiply like books, clothing and kitchen stuff only I had no idea where to dispose of them. Alas, I found the simplest answer ever. The DPW on New Road.
About books
We are bibliophiles – people who love books. Most rooms in our home have at least one bookcase. We are also word nerds. We collect fun words.
It is always nice to support Jeff Morrow and the Book Corner (the coolest used and new bookstore in Western New York, 1801 Main St., Niagara Falls.
We also keep an eye out for the third day of library book sales when you can fill a bag for $5.
The idea is to create an intentional surplus so we randomly love bomb little libraries. We filled DeVeaux Woods, Whirlpool State Park and the Underground Railroad Heritage Museum.
If you have a surplus of books we can always get rid of a grocery bagful or two.
Forno e Mercato
Working in Williamsville on Wednesday I noticed Forno e Mercato, a new bakery at the corner of Sheridan and Evans.
I stopped for a look. The thin crust pizza looks delectable. So do the Italian Cookies, bread and charcuterie meats.
They have fresh bread and gelato as well. The business is run by the folks who have Forno e Gelato and Frankie Primo’s in North Tonawanda.
We will be back for pizza when we work there and meat for lunch but it remains hard to beat DiCamillo’s Linwood Ave. for convenience when we are home. As I tell tour guests, “it’s dangerous having a place this wonderful 2 minutes from home by car, 5 minutes by bike.”

The ice on Goat Island is melting as I write this but when we get another coldsnap, go check it out. It is spectacular. Cave of the Winds winter tickets are just $8
