Dog shelter comes before council twice

The agreement back on agenda to enter a temporary contract with Island Pet Lodge for 10 kennels until the City of Niagara Falls is ready to open its new shelter is so important it is on the agenda for the City Council for a special meeting Monday night and again for the regular agenda Wednesday.

That way if Donta Myles doesn’t show up Monday or Traci Bax is out of town the topic can come before the council for a rubber stamp on Wednesday.

Garbage cans

If you need your garbage can fixed call 311.

Our broken hinge is now repaired.

The trouble with the garbage cans is Casella’s uses automated trucks that slam the cans.

It enables one employee in a right-drive truck to collect a whole route without leaving the cab.

It also leads to more easily damaged cans which are now beyond their lifespan.

The challenge is how to replace the can. It’s not just just putting the new cans in place but hauling away the old ones.

The cost is said to be $1.8 to $2 million. Beyond vacant property, with much owned by the city, and potholes, the deterioration of cans is a big issue. Blue can replacements likely come first because they get picked up every week so they wore out more quickly.

Concert canceled

A friend has now tried three times to host a home concert in North Tonawanda featuring Ron Hawkins of the Lowest of the Low.

First, it was canceled because of the pandemic.

Then it was canceled because Hawkins had a head cold.

The latest blow is the cruelest: He canceled because he doesn’t feel safe crossing the border again until after there is stateside regime change. Canadian musicians have been needlessly hassled at the border. How shameful.

New path

I tried out the new path into Artpark on my bike this week. The switch backs are tight. You end up riding brakes all the way. It is way more fun to stick on the path to center street.

My errand was to go to the Artpark box office. I came away with tickets for UB40 and George Thorogood. Going to the box office avoids supporting Ticketmaster and saves on fees.

Rose of Sharon, knotweed must die

I let an area of the yard go last year and am now trying to put it back in order. Rose of Sharon is everywhere. Ditto knotweed. The knotweed sprouts are a tasty vegetable. Our compost is now full. I hate to send green stuff to the landfill especially this close to Earth Day but the knotweed might have to go because it resprouts and is impossible to eradicate.
