Chautauqua tales

We were out of town for a quick couple-day visit to Chautauqua County, staying near Jamestown.

Fall colors there are a week or two ahead.

Hiked through Bentley Nature Preserve near Fluvanna. We also stopped at Big Inlet Brewing for a pint and a rocking set by the Living Room Jam Band.

At Petersen’s Farm Market, I perused the meat freezer wares looking for locally-grown product when I saw a thing I did not recognize, “Korv”. It was $11.50 so I bought it.

The woman at the counter dug out a recipe card.

Korv is a Swedish delicacy, sort of like an oversized sage-flavored breakfast sausage with potatoes and barley, almost a Scandanavian take on scrapple.

We also visited the Fredonia Farmers’ Market, a smallish gathering of local producers with good ready-made food providers.

I have been collecting seed garlic for next year’s crop. This year was good, not great.

An overly friendly Jamaican fellow named Joseph gave Gord some love at the Fredonia market. Joseph somehow did not fit in. I asked one of the vendors if he was around every week. She said only the last two.

There was a problem with homeless people staying along the Chadakoin River in Jamestown and covered in the local press a couple months ago.

Chautauqua County, with help from New York State, spread them to other communities, including Fredonia where they are renting rooms at Motel 6. Joseph told people he came from Gowanda just to check things out but it is more likely he came from that Jamestown camp. We left him smiling, laughing at the sky in praise, shouting "thank you God."
