A chickadee, a pooch and a bee

Any time someone starts with “I’m not prejudice or nothing like that” it is followed by racism or prejudice. So here’s a twist on it: “I’m not superstitious or nothing like that. . .” OK, just a little stitious but am I? I wake at dawn daily, let Gord out, sit quietly and enjoy the morning with the screen door open. In recent days, the bird sounds have changed. The Carolina wren is back. We still have chickadees, jays and house sparrows and flickers. Yesterday, The Merlin app on my phone heard a pileated woodpecker and our merlin was back being the wicked house sparrow killer it is.Then Friday, as I looked at Helene getting ready to wreak havoc down south, my calm was interrupted by a massive carpenter bee flying in for a visit. I thought nothing of it but it hasn't happended before.Saturday morning, we had another visitor, a chickadee. I did not ask its pronoun but the bold girl landed on Gord’s cage, and the bookshelf, and posed on the ceiling fan just short enough I couldn’t get its picture. I know, pictures or it didn’t happen. Gord did not notice because he is mostly concerned with squirrels. And woodchucks. And possums and whatever else he can kill.Last Tuesday, at about 10 p.m. he went to pee and found a skunk which he attacked and shocked into momentary submission. I was watching, intervened, told him to sit (he did), dragged him insided by the collar and went back out to check on Pepe le Pew. Pepe had fled the scene without spraying either of us. That time was lucky. Next time we probably both get it.But here’s the question: Has anyone else observed strange animal behavior in the last 48 hours? I blame the hurricane. The chickadee, with years of chances, only visited today.Ok, just a little sticious.
