United Way announces equity challenge

United Way of Greater Niagara, in partnership with Niagara University, announced the launch of the 2024 “14-Week Equity Challenge,” a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting equity, inclusion, and social justice throughout the Niagara region. Beginning Monday, Sept. 2, this free on-line course will empower participants to deepen their understanding of important equity issues and take meaningful action toward a more just and inclusive community.

The Equity Challenge is designed to engage individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and educational institutions through a series of weekly themes that cover key topics such as racial equity, economic disparities, education gaps, healthcare access, and more. Each week, participants will receive educational content including articles, videos, and reflective exercises aimed at fostering greater awareness of systemic issues affecting marginalized communities.

“This initiative is an incredible opportunity for the Niagara community to come together and confront inequities in our region,” said Will Briggs, Community & Business Development Associate of United Way of Greater Niagara. “Through education and reflection, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

Niagara University, a longtime advocate for social justice and community engagement, will play a key role in the challenge. University faculty and students will actively participate, contributing educational resources and facilitating discussions that enhance participants' learning experience.

“Niagara University is deeply committed to addressing issues of equity and justice,” said Dr. David Taylor, PhD, Professor of Criminal Justice at Niagara University. “Collaborating with United Way of Greater Niagara allows us to extend our reach and encourage more community members to be part of this critical conversation.”

The challenge is free and open to the public. It provides an accessible way for individuals from all walks of life to reflect on equity and take action toward making positive change. Participants can engage with the challenge at their own pace, with opportunities to join discussions, share insights, and collaborate on solutions.

Those interested in participating in the 2024 14-Week Equity Challenge can sign up on United Way of Greater Niagara’s website (https://uwgn.org/equity/) where weekly content will be distributed. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #EquityChallengeUWGNU
