The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is getting a maintenance upgrade.
GHD is the consultant on the project, Greenman Pederson is the engineering firm. The bridge is managed by the Niagara Bridge Commission. Bidding was completed in 2023.
A gigantic crane is in place on the US side of the bridge. A brief internet search revealed at least a half-dozen articles about the project but none revealed the cost or specifics of the project.
A worker on site over the weekend lubing the Clark Rigging crane on site said the work being performed is pillar rehab because of deteriorating concrete and anchor bolt corrosion and gorge wall stabilization.
Workers hanging from the crane in a large steel work basket are drilling into the gorge wall and installing rock anchors.
Built in 1962, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, a truss design, sits 370 feet above the Niagara River and measures 1,600 feet long.
Here’s an example of the sort of language published about the project.
“Over the years, the humid conditions of the Niagara Gorge have resulted in early signs of corrosion on the bridges’ skewback connections. GHD and NFBC aim to optimize asset life cycle costs, extend their operational lifespans, and ensure seamless traffic and goods flow across the border.”
This is the most obtuse writing since we learned about state parks working to maximize viewsheds.
