The demise of Sully

I will leave it to others to pile on but here’s what Jerry Sullivan said: “The worst fans really are the women. They don’t get critical journalism. They’re all wannabe cheerleaders.”

Jerry has alway been a bitter, acerbic curmudgeon. The Gazette sports department is down to Nick Sabato. Sullivan was a freelancer who only existed as long as Newfane Lumber sponsored him.

Sports Editor Mike Meiler left to manage a couple Fattey beer locations a couple months ago.

As for Sully, I was surprised how few people defended him. When you’ve always been mean-spirited and negative, eventually, cancel culture is going to come for you. I wrote more than once Sullivan woke up in the morning and sucked on a lemon. It was the sweetest thing that happened all day.

I had my own issues while writing at the Gazette. First, no one was available to edit my copy. Second, and more grievously, leadership was detached and uninvested in Niagara Falls and Lockport.

An out of town publisher would read my columns in print and call me out for expressing real emotion and discussing issues that offended his whiteness.

The Gazette was better with Sullivan on board. Interestingly, WIVB, where he also has a voice, has been silent on the matter.
