Don't underestimate Niagara Falls, NY development

Niagara Falls Ontario understands development

The city, with the help of the provincial government is host to hundreds of new homes being built. Some of them are even affordable.

First, they doubled down on tourism, commercial, crass, honkey-tonk Vegas style tourism but revenue-generating muck.

Now they are focused on new housing.

Meanwhile, we have an event center proposed a half-mile from the tourism district, adjacent to a bird-killing casino and competing with a $1.5 billion proposed event center.

As hard as it is to see that, there is new housing being constructed at First and Niagara streets. Most of it as close to market rate.

There is also the redevelopment of Hotel Niagara and Live! Niagara, the rock-themed new hotel transforming from Howard Johnson’s carcass.

Adjacent is the Hydraulic Canal Niagara Heritage Gateway.

A short distance away is Main Street’s Suspension Bridge District where the first 4 of 39 properties slated for development at least have preferred developers.

The state has kicked in $5 million from Empire State Development. $4 million of it mostly helping make Jenss feasible and $1 million doing the same for the Rapids Theatre.

Later this year, the Freedom Plaza will be constructed adjacent to the Whirlpool Bridge by the Suspension Bridge abutment, giving us another place to tell the tale of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

Within the decade, the remaining scar of the Robert Moses Parkway will be removed. There is more good going on as well.

I reassert for those not listening, they can build all the casinos they like in Canada, and all the undersized, cheaply built, over-priced housing the government can subsidize. The only thing better in Canada remains the view of the three waterfalls. https://niagarafalls.ca/news/posts/city-of-niagara-falls-exceeds-provincial-housing-target-receives-28-million-through-ontario-s-building-faster-fund/
