Luella Kenny speaks truth
(Editor's note: Luella Kenny posted this as a Facebook status Friday and it rang true. The Love Canal nightmare may never end.)
One block from 20,000 tons of chemicals a young family bought a house not knowing that this was Love Canal and their children are now sick. The seller told them he never lived in the house and knew of nothing wrong with the house.
This home is three blocks North of my old house, also on Black Creek where 48 years ago my seven year old son died because of 32 ppb of Dioxin in the yard. The city of Niagara Falls has hidden this information over the years. Signs on the fence say private property, no trespassing. The area was renamed Black Creek Village. A couple of years ago a New York Times reporter was in the area because of the resale of condemned homes.
This reporter spoke to different people who were working in the area and no one knew it was Love Canal. The city built a playground within yards of Love Canal and a picnic area. I recently noticed the play area was torn down. Hopefully, it will not be rebuilt. A huge little league area is now on the grounds of the old 93rd st school.
I had a devastated mother of a little leaguer call me when she brought her son for a game and learned. he was playing in The Love Canal area. These are all calculated plans to make the area look safe. Under no circumstances should these homes be sold to young families with young children or planning on having children.
There should be full disclosure that the house is in Love Canal. Recently, I spoke to someone who was told she had bought a house in Love Canal after the final papers were signed.
This is not full disclosure.Downtown Niagara Falls is a disaster, but money is spent to hide the 20,000 tons of chemicals that are present within yards of homes with children and playgrounds.City of Niagara Falls take off the rose covered glasses.
