City to rededicate tennis courts

Niagara Falls will rededicate the Hyde Park Tennis Courts to Robert Laurrie this morning.

Laurrie was an educator and athlete and also is the father of Mark Laurrie, who just retired as school superintendent.

Reading between the lines, paying appropriate homage to Mr. Laurrie is a good way for Mayor Restaino to retain the allegiance of Mark Laurrie who might be one of the few viable candidates who could run for mayor.

About that attorney

Consider the confluence of events preceding the publication of Christen Civiletto’s “Thundering Waters” which I wrote about the other day.

Through life experience, in her own illness and that of her father and community members, she became a subject matter expert and successful attorney in a very specialized field.

Then she secured a publishing contract with Princeton Press. Then, as her book was published, radioactive waste came to light and a new crisis became apparent in the community.

It is serendipitous and tragic at the same time.

What other sites will come to light?

Over the weekend we heard tales of people near Hyde Park Golf Course receiving letters about the potential their homes may have been contaminated with radioactive waste.

If I were into conspiracy theories, I would question why the State Department of Environmental Conservation is moving so slowly.

Even more troubling is the appearance of pieces of Love Canal plastic cap in people’s drains and sump pumps.

Cut some flowers

Some critics from Lewiston who support chemically enhanced suburban monoculture love to criticize the Gorge View Bike path as sloppy and unkempt.

I suggest you take a walk. Bring scissors. Coreopsis, echinacea and bergamot are dominating the landscape. The Great Gorge Railway trail is lined with a proliferation of thimble berries.

You can keep your patch of golf course for a front lawn in your boring subdivision. I will be over here celebrating life with the birds, bees and butterflies.
