A 2009 Buick, driven by a 23 year old man, was traveling west on Niagara Falls Blvd. While in the process of making a left hand turn onto 47th St, the vehicle was struck at a right angle by an eastbound electric scooter that was being operated by a 62 year old man. Witnesses reported the vehicle had a green light and left turn arrow and that the scooter passed through a red light.
The operator of the scooter was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious head injuries. By law, helmets are not required when operating electric scooters, but are recommended. He was transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center where he was rushed into surgery.
The Crash Investigation Unit is following up and charges are pending.
