Editor's note: Nate McMurray read The Niagara Express interview with Niagara Falls Ontario Mayor Jim Diodati and was rightfully offended by the woeful neglect of the federal and state government regarding our fine city. Here’s what he wrote.
I just read this interview with Niagara Falls, Ontario Mayor James Diodati, and honestly—it made me angry.
Look at what’s happening right across the river.
They’re talking about billions in investment. A new $3.6 billion hospital campus. A restored power station becoming a 5-star hotel. Expanded regional rail. Airport upgrades. A growing university downtown. Plans to redevelop Marineland into a year-round attraction. A coordinated tourism strategy across the region.
That’s what momentum looks like.
And here on the New York side? We’re still arguing over scraps.
Now, before anyone jumps in to blame the mayor of Niagara Falls, NY—let’s be honest. The mayor here has about as much independent power as the mayor in Ontario does. Neither can do big things without help from higher levels of government.
Ontario is investing in Niagara Falls.
Albany is not investing in Niagara Falls, New York at anything close to the same scale.
And here’s the real question: how are we ever supposed to fix that when so much of our regional political leadership is built around attacking Albany instead of working with it?
For decades, too many local Republicans have run on one message: Albany is terrible, government is useless, nothing works, everything is broken. If your entire political identity is opposing the state government, how do you ever secure major state investment?
You don’t.
Meanwhile, across the river, they’re building hospitals, hotels, rail connections, campuses, and destinations.
You don’t have to agree with every decision Ontario makes. But you do have to admit they’re acting like Niagara Falls is worth investing in.
We should be asking why New York isn’t doing the same—and what it will take to change that.
HERE IS THE SOLUTION—as simple and clear as I can make it—vote for me and I will help the mayor fix Niagara Falls by getting support from Albany. WE CAN FIX NIAGARA FALLS, NY!
I was following the article until it said “…vote for me and I will help the mayor fix Niagara Falls…”
Why not help the mayor now to fix Niagara Falls? We cannot wait on a what if scenario; we need action, collaboration, cooperation now.
Fixing Niagara Falls is a process, not an event. You can't flip a switch.
NFNY, like much of the Rustbelt, needs lean urbanism -- reduced government profile, cut regulation, welfare tied to work, less govt meddling, and getting out of the way of private investment that is willing to invest here. Since gov't won't cut itself, someone needs a mandate and power to come in do it. People with money have so many other choices -- why would they choose NFNY when it is so difficult to work with and live in this city -- e.g. Its antiquated and punitive services where you can't even pre-authorize payment of your property taxes. So many people with the means to move have moved or thinking about it, leaving a large population of un/under employed/disabled/destitute/discouraged as the remaining demographic. Who is going to arrest this vicious cycle? I praise those with the fire inside them to fight for this city and its rebirth! The current mayor's crazy idea of using public funds to build a $200M arena with little to no net income would burden us long into the future, and never bring in the promised money. Direct that money to numerous small/modest main street incentives tied to results rather than promises. Give away lots tied to results-oriented requirements. Open zoning to allow for tiny homes and build-flexibility. Advertise to Ontarians who may want a home here; try to attract sunbelt former NFNY residents to build/buy a summer home here. Consolidate city owned empty lots into green corridors to create wildlife connections and trails. Lots of potential here.
