School board apologizes

Editor’s note: On March 6, a Gaskill Preparatory Academy non-tenured teacher made a racist joke to two students who reported it to a parent outside school who reported it to the media. Reporting it to the media resulted in the teacher being fired. Community members reported to the Express that was the only reason the incident became public and resulted in action. In most circumstances, it would have been covered up, even if the teacher was dismissed. Now the school board has issued an apology. Not sure if they doth protesteth too much, but draw your own conclusion and wonder how the new superintendent will handle similar instances which are, reportedly not unique.)

NIAGARA FALLS BOARD OF EDUCATION

APRIL 2026

As members of the Niagara Falls Board of Education, we wish to express our complete disdain and most sincere and heartfelt apology to the two students, district student body, staff, parents, and community for the highly inappropriate and completely insensitive words used by a former Gaskill Preparatory teacher on Friday, March 6, 2026. As a Board, we investigated this quickly, acted decisively, and remain highly committed to restoring dignity, trust, and confidence with our stakeholders.

As a school district that believes our diversity is a strength, this type of behavior will never be tolerated. In addition to the immediate removal of the teacher, healing circles were conducted for all students and staff. Our Superintendent spent two days on site visiting classrooms, students, and staff. This is still not enough when dealing with such an egregious act. We pledge to not view this as an occurrence or issue that has immediate closure, but an opportunity to address and teach. Additional trainings, professional development, and opportunities for real discussion and learning are currently being scheduled.

Words are real and they can hurt. Actions, recognition, and continuous learning are our opportunity to educate, teach, and grow. This very unfortunate situation is also an opportunity and a call to action. We pledge our continued positive action. Our students and community deserve better.
