All for an Island

Donald Trump has suggested imposing steep tariffs on countries that support Greenland, while emphasizing the unmatched power of the U.S. military. The frame is lacking a crucial democratic principle: military force should be used as a last resort.

Threatening economic punishment followed by implied military action undermines diplomacy and international stability. While some supporters may view this rhetoric as decisive leadership, it risks normalizing the idea that power alone determines right.

History has repeatedly shown that such thinking can have severe consequences, and empathy, restraint, and respect for human dignity are qualities that must guide both domestic leadership and international relations. Strength becomes indistinguishable from abuse without them
