One of our favorite places to hike with Gord is Stonehaven Nature Preserve.
The former Scout Camp is now owned by the Town of Lewiston with help from the Western New York Land Conservancy.
Everytime we walk there, we see something different.
Most recently, we made a wrong turn and ended up in Bond Lake. We were so twisted, and it was dusk, we decided to road walk back to our car because I didn’t want to be in the woods trying to make it down the escarpment after dark.
On that same journey, halfway up the hill, not far from the stone leanto, we also discovered what could only be an Indian trail tree.
I need to go back again, record its exact location and report it. The legitimacy of trail trees is sometimes debated by people who like to denigrate the indigenous people who called Niagara home but history surrounds us.
Light freezing rain, with a high of 33 and low of 27 degrees. Sunny in the morning, light freezing rain during the afternoon, overcast for the evening, cloudy overnight.
I too always thought "Devil's Hole" was a curious name because, as you say, it preceded the white man. Last I checked, 'the devil' is part of the white man's mythology. I wonder what the name is in Seneca and if there's any other possible translations.
Great points. Thanks for reading. So many questions. Maybe some linguistics expert could research it. Have a great day.
