How children are raised matters
A friend argued yesterday that the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk had been radicalized and should no longer be considered right wing. I thought about it. My children reflect how they were raised. Now they are men. The Utah shooter was sired by Utah Conservatives. Bill McVeigh, for example, by all accounts was a good dad. He still gave us Timothy. Earlier this summer, I had a couple from Tennessee on a Niagara Falls tour with their 11-year-old son. They were biblical Christian home schoolers. They proudly said they visited the Ark in Kentucky just last week. You can be sure that young man is at his Church 4 days a week. It is most of his existence. That's where the trouble starts. As soon as he was out of earshot of his parents, he sidled up to me. "Hey," he said, "Can you tell me about the two suicides that happened here in the last two weeks?" He obviously had unfettered access to the internet and was woke, and looking around. Yeah, I said "woke," aware of his world and surroundings, breaking from his echo chamber at every turn. I had nothing to do with it. Neither did his teachers (he doesn't have any). I looked at him and paused before responding. "You should ask your dad about that. It's not my place." I suspect that boy will either grow up to be a milque-toast moderate like me, or a radical leftist, or a far-right assassin. We can't control where he ends up. We can see where he came from.
