Two border collie mix dogs were abandoned Friday night at DeVeaux Woods Park.
It was an act of compassion because leaving them in an alley off Pine Avenue would result in no positive outcome.
Leaving them at the dog park resulted in Park Police being tasked with taking care of them.
I visit this dog park regularly. Leaving dogs there and knowing the Park Police will take them is preferable to calling the Niagara Falls Police because from everything we are told at city council meetings, the city does not have the capacity or staff to handle most of the calls police receive about dogs or cats. Hopefully Park Police brought the animals somewhere they will be cared for and loved.
The Niagara Falls Police response would be "officer Booth is off until Monday. Leave the dogs where they are or take them home."
The city has a stray dog and cat crisis. It is not being addressed.
I hope the person responsible for abandoning these animals is identified and prosecuted, but to abandon them at DeVeaux Woods rather than elsewhere in the city was brilliant because Officer Booth, diligent as he is, is not enough and the city only has 10 kennels on Grand Island and little capacity to handle stray dogs.
Partly Cloudy , with a high of 89 and low of 73 degrees. Overcast in the morning, partly cloudy for the afternoon, sunny during the evening, fog overnight.
A national corporation vs local business.
I am waiting for the Mayor to dictate his side of the story to Rick Pfeiffer. The excuse will be twofold: 1) The current operator was way behind on his bills. 2) Everyone asks for an RFP so we did an RFP and we have to award to the lowest bidder.
