Cascades closing

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Cascades, a Canadian company, announced Tuesday that it will be closing its Niagara Falls paper packaging facility by early September.

The closure affects 123 employees and is estimated to cost around $5 million. The plant, located at 4001 Packard Road, will end its production no later than Sept. 3, 2025, after 38 years of service, the company said.

Cascades said in a news release that the decision is in line with its goal to support growth “by focusing on profitability and customer service levels.”

“This is a difficult decision, but one that is an essential part of our focus on optimizing the
performance of our Packaging sector,” said Jean-David Tardif, Cascades’ executive vice president of the packing business sector. “The future growth momentum for Cascades and our customers is very promising, and we are well positioned to capitalize on opportunities for strategic and sustainable growth. We know what we need to do to get there — simplify, optimize and focus.”

According to Cascades, some employees will stay past the Sept. 3 date, but those who stay until the end of production will be paid until Oct. 6.

The company said it will give job search support to employees throughout the process and “ensure a seamless transition” for customers.
