Suicides
Sometime around noon, Tuesday, someone jumped off the Maid of the Mist Viewing platform and landed in the water.
Park Police and other emergency personnel were unsuccessful in attempts to locate the body.
A witness told me Wednesday that after the person hit the water, one sneaker floated to the surface but there was no evidence of a body.
Also on Tuesday, it was reported someone jumped from the Goat Island pedestrian bridge and went over the American Falls.
State Parks police don’t release numbers, but it is estimated there is about 1 suicide per week at the Falls during tourism season. If you need help, call 988.
Urbacon hearing
Rick Pfeiffer reported in the Gazette this morning that a public hearing will be held in July on Niagara Falls Redevelopment’s Urbacon planned unit development. There remain more questions than answers. For example, Pfeiffer’s story says NFR owns 71.13% of the land needed for its project but no one can say if that includes the Centennial Park site or the streets the city owns that crisscross the project site.
