Potpourri for a Friday

Talked to a friend about the Heritage Area proposal to improve the intersection of Main, Portage and Pierce with street art, crosswalks and curb cuts.

I favor the project but he gave me pause, pointing out there are elements of the plan that are unclear.

Go Bike Buffalo previously tried a project at Lewiston, Monteagle and Chasm two years ago. Remnants of the experiment are vaguely visible on the street. In hindsight, it was dumb.

I use my bike instead of a car multiple times weekly and get scared passing The Y.

I don’t pretend to be a traffic engineer but I was hit with F-bombs multiple times on Ferry and Walnut before reconstruction. I haven’t heard one since.

I will listen more to people who say the proposal will have a negative impact but I don’t see it yet.

Spelling Bee

Watching the Scripps Spelling Bee and seeing the white kid that made the finals looks like Baron Trump. I can’t believe he didn’t get into Harvard. Don’t they know who his father is? Oliver Halkett lost on “aurore” but wants to be a diplomat one day.

He lost early in the game of musical chairs. The first names of the other contestants are worthy of a spelling bee of their own:

Sarvadnya, Sarv, Harini Murali, Brian, Aishwarya and Faizan

No Mow May is almost over

It’s good to see the city promoting pollinator habitats by minimally mowing in May. The movement began in England several years ago and spread to North America. Whether it makes a difference or not remains to be seen. Long grass does harbor ticks.

From a foraging perspective, there are milkweed shoots and flower buds ready to harvest.

And seriously, that crack about the city promoting No Mow May is a testament to the weather, not the administration suddenly becoming environmentally conscious. They would have mowed everything in sight if it stopped raining and they could find workers.
