The world according to Bob

(Editor’s note: Niagara Falls Mayor Bob Restaino posts a weekly Epistle to Youtube to communicate his decisions for the city. The following is culled from this week’s post.)

Off schedule

Niagara Falls High School students help record the weekly posting. This week’s was a bit early. Next week may be a bit off rhythm as well. Spring break is to blame.

New NCCC President

The Mayor wore a tie for the day because he was attending the inauguration of Dr. Lloyd Holmes, the new President of SUNY Niagara who comes here from De Anzo College in Cupertino, Calif. He also served at Monroe Community College.

(Editor’s note: Sooner or later, in the Gazette newsroom, Dr. Holmes’ headshot will be mistaken for County Legislator Jeffrey Elder.)

Tuesday movies at the Library

2:30 Mufasa The Lion King

6:30 Ghostbusters

Both being screen April 15 at the library.

Light projects advances

The changeover from incandescent to LED is on schedule.

In one month, the city recognized an $80,000 savings on its electric bill. Project it over a full year and it is not only significant savings but better light.

The city is working on a request for proposals for a vendor to maintain the lighting as well as a conversation about what technology the city wants to put in these new lighting assets.

In many ways this lighting project, which has long been in the works, will be a net savings because it was funded with American Rescue Plan

Food truck Thursday

Alan Booker is out. Tom Tedesco retired. No one is ready to pick up the reigns. It may be on pause for a year.

Dog shelter construction progressing

The Mayor Anticipates a request for proposals for an operator will be circulated in the next couple months but construction on the new Hyde Park dog shelter is progressing.

(The mayor did not mention it but a meeting will be held Tuesday for the City Council to award a temporary contract for a new dog shelter services provider after the Pit Chick terminated her contract.)

Weather

Weather determines when pothole repairs can happen. Crews are doing their best. Be on the lookout and be patient.

Coming up

In the next couple weeks development on hydraulic canal pavilion and the gorge park gateway will begin.

The Hydraulic Canal Pavilion will include a stage for warm weather activity. You may start seeing construction and work.

The project is in partnership with USA Niagara Development.

(Editor’s note: The Second Street site has been fenced off. Construction Equipment is on site. Work has begun.)

Police at work

The Mayor and his wife observed Niagara Falls Police enforcing vehicle and traffic laws. It’s good to see. People seem to think that the police department has forgotten about those things. They haven’t. They are addressing so many things and that is one of them.

“I just want to caution everyone. If you don’t want the inconvenience of getting a traffic ticket which will require you to attend court, take time away from work or whatever else keeps you busy, the imposition of a fine that will also cost you money, all of those things, and potentially even points on your license which could result in insurance increase, we have to work in partnership with the police.

Do yourself a favor, do the community a favor, stop at stop signs, respect the speed limits, be careful and cautious at intersections. We can avoid a whole lot of trouble not just for the community at large but for you personally.”

This weekend

Activities going on.

Get away from your tablet, desktop, your phone. Take a walk. Scheduling has changed because of spring break and Easter Break. Enjoy your weekend. See you next week.
