Wrapping up the Council race
We won’t know who turned in enough signatures to make the ballot until next week and, even then, in the twisted system that governs the people’s Republic of New York, many will be challenged. It takes about 750 Democratic signatures to get on the ballot and 450 Republicans. Three seats are open.
Democratic insiders:
Restaino-nominated candidates:
- John Kinney, former DPW leader and long-time city employee, now retired.
- Bridgette Myles, former Restaino administration employee who now works at Niagara University.
- Noah Munoz, political newcomer and Realtor with billboards all over town
Unendorsed incumbent on the outs:
- Donte Myles: Finishing his first term, circulating petitions on his own. Stands against Restaino at every turn. Shunned for his unwillingness to kiss the ring. Life insurance salesperson who changed careers after the mayor defunded his job with Community Missions.
Outside Challengers:
- Michia Lee: Appeared with a flourish at last week’s council meeting claiming more influence on the city than anyone on thc council. She asked the council what it is doing and accused it of misspending money and running down the city. Frantically circulating petitions. Social media influenced known online a Kilo Monroe. Signed in at the council as Mikaya Lee.
- Sylvanna Rahman: Newcomer from Niagara Falls who interviewed with the committee but was not chosen. Came from Brooklyn. The daughter of immigrants is a software engineer.
- Bob Belton: Long-time activist, concerned citizen and cyclist seen preparing petitions, as he has done in the past. Uncertain if he has gathered signatures. Retired.
Republicans:
Endorsed incumbent
- David Zajac: Ending his first term on council. Formerly served as chairperson. Usually silent in meetings. In recent months seems to be speaking out. Bowling coach whose family owns a funeral parlor.
Unendorsed Republicans with party support
- Vincent Cauley: Former short-term replacement for John Spanbauer. Outspoken critic of Restaino administration policies and spending. Known to challenge the wisdom of things like LED streetlights and bike lanes. Engineer for a big defense contractor.
- Tanya Barone: Newcomer. First started attending city council meetings over the dog shelter crisis. Wildlife rehabilitator. Has also railed against solar panels. Works in the Real Estate industry.
Unendorsed Republican circulating petitions
- John Accardo: Former mayoral candidate who served on city council from 1992 to 2001. Said to be closely aligned with Restaino. Also held in high esteem by the Italian American community and numerous people held in well regarded by the Niagara Express.
