School attendance improves
On Thursday, Dec. 19, the City School District of the City of Niagara Falls (NFCSD) New York Board of Education met for its monthly voting meeting.
Before the voting meeting, NFCSD Superintendent Mark Laurrie introduced the new Orleans/Niagara BOCES superintendent, Dr. Taweepon Farrar, who began her tenure with BOCES on July 1, 2024. Members of the administrative team were also recognized.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Richard Carella and Principal on Special Assignment Stan Wojton presented the District's student attendance tracking tool called Everyday Labs. They demonstrated the capabilities of the software and its ability to direct student attendance data by school and by student and analyze trends, patterns, and correlations to student achievement.
Comparison data for the first 10 weeks of the 2024 -2025 school year to the same period last year are showing significant improvements in attendance rates.
The school board formally accepted two gifts from community members and three grants. Tuesday, May 20, 2025, was established as school board budget voting day and board election day from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Payments to six capital project contractors were also unanimously approved.
Superintendent of Schools Mark Laurrie encouraged parents to sign up for the bus tracking app. To date, 400 parents have signed up. Ten Niagara Falls High School fall sports teams qualified as scholar-athlete worthy. One hundred twenty varsity athletes and 220 total athletes had a 90% or better academic average during the first ten weeks of school.
The District's internal auditor, the Bonadio Group, has begun auditing the District's federal grants.
The Niagara Falls Fire Department has completed its yearly inspection of all District facilities and has certified all as acceptable.
Mr. Laurrie thanked everyone who contributed to, donated to, and supported students during the holiday season. Schools are closed from December 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
The next meeting of the Niagara Falls City School District Board of Education will be a work session at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the NFCSD Administration Building, 630 66th Street, Niagara Falls
