New businesses in Lewiston and Youngstown

Step Out Buffalo recently celebrated 5 new businesses either open or soon to open in Lewiston and Youngstown.

Griffon Brewing in Youngstown, on Lockport Road (Route 93), has been open since February. We stopped last week for thing crust pizza and a beer. Both were fantastic.

Coffee and a Paper has been open since winter, the purview of Gadge and Glen Choolokian. Good coffee, Johnny Ryan Soda and classic candy.

We’ve been in Lewiston Estates and Antiques several times. The choices are varied and eclectic and there is such an array we see different things. We haven’t bought anything yet.

Bistro Avera is coming soon in the former Como Deli and according to Step Out will feature food with French and Italian influences.

Fairbanks is coming in the Frontier House when that renovation is finished. It will be higher end farm-to-table.

A sad note is the closing of Fine Antiques at Center Street and North 4th, a shop run by Ron and Marlene Craft. They are both in their 80s.

We stopped in January while Gord was being groomed. We had been in before but not purchased anything.

Still, Ron remembered us and told us he was selling everything at reasonable prices and would be selling his home.

We have a thing for books and the shelves that case them. He had a gorgeous, stackable, Globe-Wernicke glassfront oak barrister bookcase with a $575 price tag.

I took a photo of the sticker in the back of one of the shelves and looked it up on the Internet. Ron saw us lingering.

“I’d have to have a hundred and a half” he said.

We immediately agreed and said we’d be back later.

“Let me know you’re sure,” he said, “because it will be a lot of work to clear it off.”

“We will be back in about 3 or 4 hours,” I said.

We picked up Gord and headed home. I sat down for a bit and began Googling what we had agreed to purchase. It was manufactured somewhere around 1910. Online the same unit is listed for between $1,200 and $3,000. $150 was the deal of the century.

Shop carefully in Lewiston because there’s gold in them thar stores.
