We love to eat at Savor, the Old Falls Street restaurant run by the Niagara Community College Culinary Institure.
You can beat a gourmet, 4-course meal for $35 per person.
We made reservations Saturday for our birthdays. On the online special comment section of the reservation I wrote “Beth Genco’s birthday” even if it was mine.
It is a teaching restaurant so some mistakes will happen but still, what a meal.
After our bread course, house baked rolls with humus, herbed butter and homemade pickles our salad course came.
Beth ordered Granny Smith and arugula salad. Our server Giovanni brought Fennel and orange with pistachios and vinaigrette and returned 2 minutes later to apologize and offer to bring the correct salad.
I ordered the Garde Manger Board, a charcuterie plate with brie, cracker bread and olives.
The olives were different. I asked. Giovanni, who said he was a teaching assistant, didn’t know anything other than they were olives. The presentation reminded me of Judas Tree.
As we ate, I noticed an impossibly young blonde woman going table to table, moving with confidence and control. At first I thought she was a high school student observing. Then I realized she was in charge.
Our main courses were perfect. I had large garlicky shrimp over spaghetti in Alfredo sauce with sundried tomatoes and bacon lardons (small crispy flavorful chunks of bacon}.
Beth had a trio of small lambchops on a bed of whipped potatoes with rapini and demiglace.
For dessert, I had a Mexican Hot Chocolate Mousse Bomb, Spicy Chocolate Mousse, Orange Cremeux, Chocolate Cake, Blood Orange Sauce and Blood Orange Sorbet.
Beth had Opera Cake, Almond Cake Soaked in Coffee Syrup, Chocolate Ganache, Crushed Candied Almonds, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Someone in the kitchen wrote happy birthday in glazing on her plate.
We asked Giovanni about the ice cream, since the menu said the dessert was vegan. He had no idea.
When our bill came, it only included one entree. I pointed it out to Giovanni, he thought it looked OK. I handed him our debit card and he disappeared.
About 5 minutes later, the blonde woman came to our table and apologized. There was a problem with the register and she brought back two bills, one with a single entree, the other with the second entree and a drink. She apologized profusely.
Somewhere near the kitchen Giovanni is wandering in a haze wondering how they make vegan vanilla ice cream and what kind of olives those were. https://www.niagaracc.suny.edu/nfci/savor/dinner/
