and they worry about your chickens.....

My office is located on Pine Avenue. I received a letter reminding me as a business owner (who pays over twice the rate of taxes) that it is my responsibility to keep my property up. To my left is a derelict city owned building, covered in gang tags and with a two by four crossing one of the front windows. Someone came and cut down the multitude of weeds growing on and around said building and just left them on the sidewalk. Not ONCE did the city ever come and shovel snow in front of the building. They have never picked up the garbage laying around that accumulates daily. On my right is another vacant storefront. The back entrance of that building was broken into months ago. The outside door is pulled open with the handle half off. The tenant of that building comes down to me and complains his apartment is overrun with roaches and mice. Complaints to code enforcement fall on deaf ears. These issues are now infiltrating into my building. In addition, for anyone that subscribes to the "broken window" theory of crime, the condition of these neighboring buildings, makes all of us targets for crime. Code Enforcement needs to better choose its battles.

Wow Connie. I know about that letter. It was sent in error. As for the problem with maintaining city-owned property, there are numerous open jobs. They can't find anyone to work. Too often, applicants can't pass a background check or don't have a valid license. As for my chickens, code enforcement assured me they exist.
