In the before covid times, Joe Genco, before the Niagara Express became a thing, participated in Slow Roll, a weekly community bike ride in Buffalo.
The movement has now evolved to include North Tonawanda where a new weekly ride takes off tonight from Fattey Beer in the WurliTzer complex at 6 tonight and sponsored by a group calling itself North Tonawanda Slow Spokes.
Slow Spokes rose from the Monday night Slow Roll which started in Buffalo on 2015 and at one point included 2,000 cyclist or more every night.
The most gregarious and loudest ambassador of those “Hey hey, alright, we’re riding our bikes on Monday night” adventures was a yellow shirted Mark Mitri, inviting all to join Slow Spokes, handing out Slow Spokes coins and forming a group where all were welcome.
Those rides gave birth to a bunch of sub-groups, like the East Side Bicycle Club and Slow Spokes own Monday night rides with Anita West in Tonawanda. Anita has since left and has here own rides in Buffalo.
Slow Spokes now has its own event in NT, Thursday nights at 6:00 p.m. riding from 908 Niagara Falls Blvd). It’s going to be a great time.
If you attend: Show up to check in between 5 and 5:30 p.m. On-site registration is available if you haven’t signed up yet. Early check-in helps keep everything running smoothly.
After the ride, stick around for live music with “Worth A Shot.” Slow Spokes NT T-shirt at check-in—just $20!
There will be a 50/50. Hot dogs will be on sale to benefit Ride for Roswell.
Every time you ride, you’re entered to win one of two awesome bikes—a kids’ e-bike and an adult bike. Ride more = more chances to win!
Please show up ready to ride.
