Potpourri for a Wednesday

Thanks for all the birthday wishes for Beth

Mea Culpa and a follow

David Zajac is apparently running for reelection to Niagara Falls Council. Over the last 3-plus years, he has been the deciding vote once, on a small piece of American Rescue Plan funding. Also, I mischaracterized Zajac and Traci Bax as Democrats because, 99% of the time, they have formed a majority with Democratic Council Chairperson Jim Perry. I chalk the mistake up to having an idiot for an editor. (You know, paraphrasing the greatest Republican ever, President Lincoln, “he who edits his own work has an idiot for an editor.”)

Mulch

It is real, available in Hyde Park, and fresh, not frozen. I will go check it out.

Also, we all know the people spoke on the topic of chickens, deciding that even with an expensive registration and inspection process, they would be a nuisance.

For a city with perpetual problems with rats and stray cats and dogs to not add another hassle is perhaps wise. Given how understaffed, overwhelmed and ineffective code enforcement is the best thing to do is keep your chickens under cover and when you get the letter from code enforcement, deny.

Tacked onto the chicken ordinance was one against Bees. This needs to be revisited. Bees are harmless. The trouble is people fear them because they, unfortunately look like yellow jackets which are wasps.

Car trouble

We’ve had a tough couple days with Beth’s Passat which died in the lot of Military Road Tops. It is awaiting diagnosis and repair at Coppins in Lewiston. It might just be a battery.

A little bit ago we had Steve’s fix a turbocharger oil leak. Coppins has done work for us as well and is closer since Steve closed his Lewiston Road shop which was rented to Thunderstruck auto but now looksCar vacant.

We wished the best to Thunderstruck but one bad experience was too much. Truth is there are a bunch of people in 2-mile radius of that shop that hope for someplace where they can drop their car and walk home.

Don Glynn

A birthday treat for me was stopping at Village Bakeshop to get some cake for Beth. I stuck my head in the door at Mastantuono Allstate to say hello to Jamie. Phil was there and bounded out of his chair to say a quick happy birthday to Beth.

As I walked back around, I saw legendary Gazette journalist Don Glynn. We exchanged warm greetings and he gave me his contact information. I will be tracking him down for coffee or a beer Somewhere because he is a treasure.

The Gazette unceremoniously dismissed him during cutbacks under the Chris Voccio administration.
