“We would like to congratulate Mrs. Annie Edson Taylor on her successful trip over Niagara Falls today.
“At approximately 4:30pm local time, the 43-year-old Mrs. Taylor was swept over the Horseshoe Fall inside of an oak barrel. While many foolhardy stunters have shot the rapids and whirlpool of Niagara, this is the first successful trip over the cataracts on record.
“After she was recovered from the worn barrel, Mrs. Taylor stated the following to waiting press:
‘If it was with my dying breath, I would caution anyone against attempting the feat ... I would sooner walk up to the mouth of a cannon, knowing it was going to blow me to pieces than make another trip over the Fall.’
“We presume to agree with Mrs. Taylor, as the 43-year-old seems to have aged well into her 60s as a result of the stunt.
“We are sure the stunt will gain Mrs. Taylor much notoriety and fanfare, as her manager, one Frank M. Russell, has already planned a nationwide tour of the barrel.”
