The toxic legacy of Niagara Falls

Imagine being required to pee in a cup before work, for toxic chemical screening. And after work so they could measure ortho-toluidine, a chemical used in tire manufacturing and closely associated with bladder cancer. And having the after test show 5x expected amounts and 37x accepted levels. And having your fingernails turn blue, a sign of ortho-toluidine poisoning.

All this is legal, and happened in the Niagara Falls Goodyear Plant. Pro Publica wrote about it yesterday.

Imagine, the community that played host to the toxic nightmares of Hooker Chemical and Love Canal, still is host to the ongoing toxic consequences of lax industrial regulation. 

The most frightening thing is no discussion of asbestos. What else is out there. Scary, scary stuff.
