Better than Canada yet again

The Cataract Stairs and Overlook opened Friday morning with hot sun, lots of media and representatives from state parks as well as numerous construction, engineering and architecture firms.

The $12 million project was initially conceived in 2019 to solve a problem: When the Maid of the Mist elevators are down for repairs, or when there is a power outage, there is no way for guests to escape the docks down below.

Regional Parks Director Mark Mistretta acted as master of ceremonies for the ceremonial ribbon cutting. In 40 years on the job, he said this project was the most challenging.

Going all the way to the bottom, there are 274 steps including 163 that are new. The physical labor of stone-stair building fell to Tahawus Trails, the same firm responsible for Whirlpool and Devils Hole stairs. If you look closely at the wall construction, there are parallels.

Mistretta introduced 3 speakers, Mayor Robert Restaino, Christopher Glynn of the Maid of the Mist and Saladin Allah of the Niagara National Heritage Area.

Allah told the story of the Cataract House. When the hotel first opened, employees of African descent would commute across the lower Niagara via rowboat to get to work. Eventually, the Whitney’s built employee quarters. So employees could stay locally for overnights.

Numerous people shared images from the new facility. It is hard to add much. The steel steps feel like a fire escape.

The new stairs as a whole, however, give us another new attraction better than anything Canada has to offer. Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Portal Tunnel and everything else in Canada is less.

• Winter Operations: Concerns were raised regarding the stairs' viability in winter. The team will monitor conditions closely, noting that ice buildup typically begins once the wind changes and the boat tours cease operations.
