Statement from Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino regarding declaration of local state of emergency
Niagara Falls, NY – “As a result of the failure once again by the City Council to approve funding for various public safety measures related to the deteriorating conditions of roadways and blighted properties, I have signed an order declaring a local state of emergency.
“The Council’s dereliction of duty to protect the health and safety of the residents and taxpayers is inexcusable.
“Unpaved roads and the blight created by abandoned properties pose a threat not only to our residents, but also to the members of our police and fire departments.
“The Council’s inability to uphold their constitutionally sworn responsibilities leaves me no other option but to decare a state of emergency.”
Sunny, with a high of 82 and low of 60 degrees. Sunny in the morning, clear overnight.
This seems so ridiculously obvious, I wonder if the idea has ever been seriously broached before! If that revenue could be judiciously applied to also enhance the tourist experience, it would result in more visitor retention and even more $$$ spent on this side.
A great idea, but who would make sure such largesse, if actually obtained, is not wasted like so much has been over the decades? Waste like Urban Renewal of the 60's, a/k/a destruction of downtown, Wintergarden, then its demolition, Convention Center, now owned by the Senecas to settle the lawsuit, and on and on.
